How interaction can get more personal with Mixed Reality (aka Hololens)

Of course … everyone wants a Hololens, me as well. But … what to do with it? The power of such devices is not in the device itself, it’s in the use of it. That sounds like an open door, but it’s harder than you think to come up with good ideas. Hololens is part of the More Personal Computing idea – bring computers closer to humans and make the interaction more natural and powerful.

You’ve probably seen the demo’s of Hololens. It’s mind-blowing if you think about that. And as the actual Hololens is still very limited in production (only as a developer kit in the US and Canada today), it’s almost a bit silly to think far ahead. But today we released another video with an envisioning of how interaction can get more personal.By the way, you probably already heard about Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR). But the Hololens team is talking about Mixed Reality – it’s not about a graphical overlay, but a real blend between the real, 3D, world and virtual 3D objects. And in the combination of those two is the power … and the work.

To create an interaction and experience that really empowers users in a special way, it takes a lot of thinking, design, development and testing. Even with powerful tools like Unity 3D.

At Computex we announced that Windows Holographic is coming to devices of all shapes and sizes from fully immersive virtual reality to fully untethered holographic computing. We invite our OEM, ODM, and hardware partners to build PCs, displays, accessories and mixed reality devices with the Windows Holographic platform. Read more about that in this blogpost.

it will be possible for hardware manufacturers to build there own holographic devices using our platform.

But until it gets more ‘normal’ to work on projects like these, be inspired by the envisioning video we released today … and be inspired and amazed. What will you come up with?
